TRACEABILITY

REPRISE :Built from
remaining materials from
past collections.

REPRISE is an ongoing Graphpaper project that revisits materials and designs from past collections, reinterpreting them through a contemporary perspective and giving them new value.

The project works with surplus fabrics from previous collections, as well as materials that have been used in the past. Their history and context are carried forward, while being re-edited from a present-day point of view.

Rather than simply recreating what came before, REPRISE brings existing ideas and materials back into form within a new context, revealing their inherent qualities and allowing them to be seen in a different way.

Season :25 Spring / Summer

The theme of the Spring/Summer 2025 collection was “ALTERATION,” focusing on expressions that emerge by chance, beyond human intention or control.

Inspired by yohen, a phenomenon in ceramics where unexpected colors and patterns emerge during firing, the collection embraced subtle variations and individual differences created through materials and processing.

It explored the possibilities of design shaped not by the maker’s intention alone, but also by the unpredictable nature of the process.

Dyeing :KANAIKOGEI

Based on Amami Oshima, Kanai Kougei carries forward the island’s traditional natural dyeing techniques. Using locally rooted materials such as techi wood (sharinbai), mud, and Ryukyu indigo, each piece is dyed by hand.

Amami’s distinctive mud-dyeing technique involves first dyeing the fabric with an extract from techi wood, then repeatedly immersing it in iron-rich mud to fix the color. The reaction between the plant and earth creates a depth of color that is never completely uniform, with subtle variations depending on the material and dyeing conditions.

Rather than simply preserving traditional techniques, Kanai Kougei continues to explore new possibilities in dyeing and its relationship with different materials, connecting the natural environment and craftsmanship of Amami with the present day.
